Sisonke Msimang

Activist and writer, South Africa

Sisonke Msimang is one of the most significant voices in contemporary South Africa. She is a regular columnist for the Daily Maverick, writing about money, power and sex in Africa and beyond. She has worked on democracy and governance, gender and AIDS for the last two decades. Sisonke was recently named an Aspen New Voices fellow where her work focuses on inequality and social justice. She is also a Senior Programme Specialist for the South African NGO, Sonke Gender Justice. In 2012, Sisonke was a Yale World Fellow. She was Executive Director of the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) for five years and before that a regional advisor for UNAIDS covering East and Southern Africa. Sisonke holds a master's degree from the University of Cape Town's African Gender Institute.
